How NDIS worker screening expiry works

5-year validity

A clearance is valid for 5 years from the date it is granted, unless suspended or revoked earlier.

Renew early

Renewals can take weeks. Start at least 90 days before expiry to avoid a gap in clearance.

No risk-assessed work after expiry

A worker cannot stay in a risk-assessed role once their clearance lapses, until a new one is granted.

Worker screening expiry: common questions

How long is an NDIS Worker Screening Check valid?

An NDIS Worker Screening Check clearance is valid for 5 years from the date it is granted, unless it is suspended or revoked earlier. The clearance is portable across employers and states while it remains valid, but the worker and provider are responsible for renewing it before it expires.

What happens when a worker screening check expires?

Once a clearance expires, the worker can no longer be engaged in a risk-assessed role delivering NDIS supports until a new clearance is granted. Registered providers must not allow a worker in a risk-assessed role to continue without a current clearance, so a lapse can mean standing the worker down or moving them to a non-risk-assessed role.

When should I start the renewal?

Because a new application can take several weeks to process, it is good practice to start the renewal at least 90 days before expiry, with reminders at 90, 60 and 30 days. Building a register of every worker's clearance number and expiry date is the simplest way to avoid a gap.

Do all NDIS workers need a worker screening check?

Workers in risk-assessed roles for registered NDIS providers must hold a clearance. A risk-assessed role generally means a role for which the normal duties include direct delivery of specified supports or services to a person with disability, more than incidental contact, or a key personnel role. Providers must keep records of clearances and the roles workers hold.

Is this calculator legal advice?

No. This calculator estimates the expiry date from the standard 5-year validity of an NDIS Worker Screening Check clearance and produces a record and reminder schedule. Clearance terms and transitional arrangements can vary, so always verify the exact status and expiry with the relevant state or territory Worker Screening Unit and the NDIS Commission.
